Roosters

Captain Jack

Captain Jack was rescued Captain in the Spring of 2018, with 18 other birds, from a landfill, where they were callously dumped. We found wonderful, loving homes for all but 4 of the 19 birds, and those last 4 live at Blackbird Ranch. Captain Jack loves gentle neck rubs and fresh corn on the cob.

Cedar

Our handsome boy, Cedar, was part of a large-scale cock-fighting confiscation in 2023. Our friends at Heartwood Haven Farm Sanctuary took the lead on the rescue and placed dozens of these fighting roosters into good homes, and that’s when Cedar came to Blackbird Ranch. Cedar was very frightened when he arrived, but quickly settled in. He is still a little nervous being handled but is starting to trust humans a bit more now. All his prior experience with humans was abusive and frightening; it’s not surprising he is nervous to trust again. Cedar lives with his lady friend, Patricia, and he takes excellent care of her. He is protective and chivalrous. Cedar’s favorite snacks include mealworms, cherry tomatoes, and grapes.

Mayhem

Mayhem is one of our mini-bro’s! He is a full grown rooster that fits in the palm of your hand! Mayhem was found on the side of a busy road in town, most likely dumped because he is a rooster. Roosters aren’t allowed in city limits because they are considered a nuisance. Roosters like to sing the song if their people, at all hours of the day and night, and while we appreciate their voices here, others don’t always feel the same. Roosters are dumped and abandoned more frequently than any other farmed animal, sadly. Mayhem enjoys the bachelor life at Blackbird Ranch, where he lives with his best dudes. He spends his days foraging in the tall grass, partaking in crowing contests and otherwise living like a frat boy. Although Mayhem wouldn’t want his buds to know this, he really is a very sweet, cuddly little rooster.

Hens

Molly

Molly was a wayward chicken, rescued in 2022, after being found wandering the streets of downtown Pullman. Though Molly is a tough, confident gal, the streets are a dangerous place for a chicken with the busy traffic, and predators like foxes and coyotes who have made themselves comfortable in the city limits. Molly is a small, sweet hen with a fluffy little crown of feathers on her head. She lays pretty blue eggs and loves to give herself dust baths in the sunshine. Molly is very inquisitive and often follows behind our volunteers hoping for treats. Her favorite snacks are sunflower seeds, watermelon, and cherry tomatoes.

Murphy

Murphy was rescued in the Spring of 2022 after being brutally attacked by a dog. She was about 4 hours away, in Oregon, when we received the call that she needed emergency care, and there were no veterinary hospitals nearby to see her in the middle of the night, when the call came in. When we arrived to pick her up, she was in such bad shape, we didn’t think there was any chance she would survive the long drive back. Her pelvic bone was fractured and sticking out of her skin, her neck and crop had been torn open, and she had multiple deep wounds on her head. We gave her a dose of pain meds and drove her back to the sanctuary as fast as possible. First thing in the morning, we got her in for an emergency appointment at the veterinary hospital. The veterinarian was in disbelief that she was still alive after all she had endured. She remained at the hospital for several days to get supportive care and appropriate pain management, then was discharged where we continued with her recovery care. Her open wounds were closed, deep wounds were treated, and we took one day at a time with her recovery. Eventually, Murphy’s personality started to return, and she started feeling better. She made a remarkable full recovery but was left with a permanent severe limp. Murphy is one of the toughest animals we have ever met, she was so full of fight and desire to live, that we were not going to give up on her. She is such a sweet girl and we love her deeply. Murphy loves to spend her days taking dirt baths in the sun, and snacking on oranges, grapes, and corn, which are her favorites.

Patricia

Patricia is our sweet cross-beak chicken. She was born with a beak deformity where her upper and lower beak don’t align properly, instead they are perpendicular to each other. Often with deformities of this nature, the bird cannot eat normally and has to be handfed. This is not the case with Patricia; she doesn’t let her beak deformity slow her down at all, and she can eat just fine. Patricia is a very docile, gentle, friendly hen and seems to enjoy being snuggled. She lives with her boyfriend, Cedar, who loves her very much and takes good care of her. Patricia was brought to Blackbird after her previous person had to move out of state and couldn’t take her with them. She settled in very fast and made herself right at home at Blackbird Ranch. Patricia enjoys sleeping in till late in the morning and basking in the sun. Her favorite treats are orange slices and grapes.
