Roosters
Baba O’Riley

Baba O’Riley and his brother Captain Jack were rescued from a landfill this past summer. 19 chickens and roosters were rescued that day, after someone sadly dumped them, and many have now been adopted out to wonderful, loving homes. Baba, and his brother, are adorable little bantam roosters, and are only about 8” tall, full grown, but have the testosterone of a big giant roo! Baba’s interests include scratching around in the dirt for worms, securing the perimeter of his enclosure from intruders and hanging out in the man cave with Jack.
Captain Jack

Captain Jack was rescued Captain in the Spring of 2018, with 18 other birds, from a landfill, where they were callously dumped. We found wonderful, loving homes for all but 4 of the 19 birds, and those last 4 live at Blackbird Ranch. Captain Jack lives with his best bro, Baba O’ Riley, in their 2-person mini frat house. They have such a loving bromance, and are always side by side. Captain Jack loves gentle neck rubs and fresh corn on the cob.
Murray

Murray is a miniature rooster and lives with 3 other mini’s at Blackbird Ranch. Murray arrived at Blackbird Ranch in 2018 after being turned in to a high kill shelter. His story is sadly common, people get baby chicks and think they are all going to be female, then when one chick develops into a male, they get dumped at the shelters. The shelters get overrun with roosters and many of them get euthanized. Luckily Murray found his way to us with the help of another sanctuary and he can live out his full life in the man cave with his bro’s.
Mayhem

Mayhem is one of our 7 mini-bro’s! He is a full grown rooster that fits in the palm of your hand! Mayhem was found on the side of a busy road in town, most likely dumped because he is a rooster. Roosters aren’t allowed in city limits because they are considered a nuisance. Roosters like to sing the song if their people, at all hours of the day and night, and while we appreciate their voices here, others don’t always feel the same. Roosters are dumped and abandoned more frequently than any other farmed animal, sadly. Mayhem enjoys the bachelor life at Blackbird Ranch, where he lives with his 4 best dudes. He spends his days foraging in the tall grass, partaking in crowing contests and otherwise living like a frat boy. Although Mayhem wouldn’t want his buds to know this, he really is a very sweet, cuddly little rooster.
Scout

Scout is a miniature rooster with the biggest attitude around. He has no idea he is the size of a pigeon and we don’t tell him. Scout bounces off the legs of anyone who goes into his enclosure, as he has to prove that he is in charge. Theres a lot of testosterone in that itty bitty body! Scout was found on a hiking trail outside of Pullman, where he surely would have been coyote food, if someone hadn’t caught him up. He was taken to the local humane society and they contacted us to adopt him. Scout is quite a character and very comical to watch. Though he intimidates some of the volunteers, you can’t help but laugh at all that fire and fury packaged into a tiny bird body. Scout lives with 3 other miniature roosters in their little man cave.
Scrappy

Scrappy is a petite little rooster, with lots of confidence. He was found wandering the streets of Othello, WA the summer of 2018. Unfortunately, Othello, is known to have cock-fighting rings, so we suspect that’s where he came from. Scrappy is an Old World Game Fowl rooster, which is also a breed commonly used in fighting. Currently, Scrappy lives with his buddy Spark, who is really the only rooster he gets along with. He’s come along way in the past couple years and has calmed down a lot. He’s getting used to being handled and has made good progress with his ‘tude.
Squiggy

Squiggy, despite his teeny-tiny size is the Alpha male of the mini-bro’s flock. He lives with 3 other miniature roosters and he rules the roost! Squiggy arrived at Blackbird Ranch in 2018 after being turned in to a high kill shelter. His story is sadly common, people get baby chicks and think they are all going to be female, then when one chick develops into a male, they get dumped at the shelters. The shelters get overrun with roosters and many of them get euthanized. Luckily Squiggy found his way to us with the help of another sanctuary and he can live out his full life in the man cave with his bro’s.
Hens
Kelly

Kelly and her two sisters, Sabrina and Jill were rescued in 2019 from a local homestead who ran a Craigslist ad that the chickens were going to be turned into soup unless someone picked them up ASAP. The woman who had the girls was mad at the chickens for eating their own eggs (which is a completely normal behavior). She deemed this behavior as unforgivable and was giving them the death sentence. The 3 girls were absolutely terrified when they arrived, I can’t imagine they were ever shown love or compassion. Our volunteer who went to pick them up commented that the woman was swinging them around by their legs before she shoved them into a carrier. It took quite a while for these sisters to become comfortable with us, and they are still a bit shy. Now that they are living in a home of love, compassion and respect, they are noticeably less flighty and nervous. They are welcome to eat their eggs whenever they wish, at Blackbird Ranch, in fact, we encourage it! Kelly has the most adorable feathery feet, she is always one of the last hens to go to bed at night, and she is insanely soft.
