Animal Acquisition Policy

Blackbird Ranch offers sanctuary to abused, neglected and exploited farm animals. These farm animals will live at the sanctuary for the remainder of their lives in a loving, caring environment where they are respected and valued as members of the family.

All new incoming animals must go through a 30 day quarantine period at the ranch to assure they are not carrying anything contagious that could harm our other residents. The health and happiness of our animals is our number one priority. Our sanctuary veterinarian will examine all incoming animals and give treatments if needed for injuries or illness. Once the animal is finished with the quarantine period he/she is slowly introduced to the other animals that they will be living with allowing them to sort out their social dynamics and form friendships with each other.

Blackbird Ranch is limited by space and unfortunately can not take in every animal that comes our way. We do our best to prioritize the animals needing sanctuary, case by case, and those in an urgent situation will have priority. Abused, sick, neglected animals as well as those whose lives are in danger from the human food industry will have priority.

As of now we don’t take in horses, simply because we don’t have the appropriate set up and space to offer equines what they need. We feel there are other rescues that are better equipped to offer sanctuary to horses, often even specializing in horse rescue.

We do not take in owner relinquished pets except in extreme special circumstances outlined in our by laws.

We do not take in domestic animals such as dogs, cats, pet birds, etc., simply because there are other rescue organizations who specialize in this area and we are limited in space already.

When our sanctuary is at capacity, we try very hard to place animals from these situations into compassionate, safe homes, where they can live out their full lives. Since our formation in 2017, we have placed hundreds of animals, including assisting with large scale hoarding cases from abused, neglected, and unwanted situations into the loving homes they deserve. If you are interested in adopting a farmed animal, please contact jenna@blackbirdranchsanctuary.org , and we will add your name to our list for when homes are needed. We have an adoption application process including verifying zoning and performing home checks.

If you know of a farm animal that in an abusive or neglected situation, please reach out to us and we will do our best to help.
